You will see everything from a kitchen sink to bed springs lying in the roadway. How can you protect yourself?
The first thing that comes to mind is the 5 keys of the Smith System defensive driving program. 1.) Aim High in Steering Don’t just look over your hood. Look far enough in front of your vehicle to see what is happening. 2.) Get The Big Picture - See what is happening all around, including behind. Don’t limit your vision to the lane in which you are driving. Check the mirrors for information from behind and beside you. 3.) Keep Your Eyes Moving - Don’t get the “Expressway Stare”. Moving eyes see more. 4.) Leave Yourself An Out - Maintain a safe distance between you and the vehicles in front. In an event such as that above, distance reduces the velocity of an object thrown by the wheels of the vehicle in front. 5.)Make Sure Other Drivers See You - Other drivers need to see you. Don’t travel in their blind spot. Not only can they not see you, but also this is the immediate area where objects may be thrown from the road. |
